Sherman Lea, Jr., National President of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ), is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Virginia's College at Wise, followed by a Master's in Psychology from Hollins University. Sherman's career in human services has been marked by significant contributions to both criminal justice and mental health services. Sherman's early career saw him as a prison counselor in the Virginia Department of Corrections, where he quickly transitioned to the role of an Adult Probation and Parole Officer, rising through the ranks. During this time, he identified a crucial link between criminal activity and mental health challenges, which prompted him to shift his focus towards prevention and stabilization. In 2008, Sherman founded New Hope Support Services, LLC (NHSS) and assumed the role of Executive Director. NHSS has grown to employ 120 individuals and has provided vital community-based mental health support to thousands of individuals across Virginia, highlighting Sherman's unwavering commitment to improving mental health services within his community. Additionally, he is the owner of Omega Residential Services LLC, an organization dedicated to providing housing and mental health support to formerly incarcerated individuals, further showcasing his dedication to their reintegration into society.
